The Cliffs of Moher are now part of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark, designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. They were voted Ireland’s favourite tourist attraction in 2019 and 2020 by the Irish Independent’s Reader Travel Awards.
The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most famous natural attractions. Located on the western coast of County Clare, they stretch for about 8 kilometers (5 miles) along the Atlantic Ocean. The cliffs rise to heights of up to 214 meters (702 feet) at their highest point, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean, surrounding countryside, and the Aran Islands.
The Cliffs of Moher are renowned for their rugged beauty, dramatic cliffsides, and diverse birdlife, including puffins, gannets, and guillemots. They have been featured in numerous films and are a popular tourist destination, attracting over a million visitors each year. Visitors can explore various viewpoints, walk along designated pathways, and visit the visitor center to learn more about the cliffs’ geological significance, wildlife, and cultural history.
The Cliffs of Moher offer a stunning natural landscape that showcases the beauty and power of the Atlantic Ocean, making them a must-see attraction for many travelers visiting Ireland.
This famous Clare man (and perhaps a distant cousin of ours) built O’Brien’s Tower way back in 1835 so that he could showcase the stunning views from this unique location. He also hoped to help the local economy escape poverty. Cornelius O’Brien hosted several visitors to his new tower making it a bit of a tourist attraction even way back then.
There was once a hag or witch whose name was Mal. She was madly in love with the great Irish hero Cú Chulainn. However sadly Cú Chulainn did not like Mal back. Bound and determined Mal kept following Cú Chulainn, hoping to tell him how much she loved him and Cú Chulainn kept running away from her. He went all the way to the Loop Head! When Mal and Cú Chulainn were standing at the end of the land and she thought she surely had him then, he jumped all the way back to the Cliffs of Moher! Mal tried to follow behind but the wind was against her. She dashed tragically to pieces at Hag’s Head and her blood stained the sea all the way to the Cliffs of Moher. Or so the story goes!
It should come as no surprise that this stunning location is the filming location for many well known movies.
This trail along the Cliffs is being refurbished in 2021. You can walk all the way along the Cliffs of Moher from Doolin to Hag’s Head in Liscannor. Doolin is a great starting point to do this walk.
There are a few local sea kayaking companies that will take you, on a calm day of course, kayaking below the cliffs.
For the best of the best, surfing the Cliffs of Moher is an awesome feat.
